What to Wear for Your Family Session

I’d love to help take the stress out of choosing outfits for your session. My hope is that this will point you in the right direction as your family decides what to wear.

Location

Even before you even start to think about what to wear, first decide on a location with your photographer. Location matters a lot when deciding what to wear as you’ll want your outfits and location to complement each other in both color and style. (For example, steer clear of rust red shirts if your background will be brick.)

Start with Mom

Choose an outfit that you feel beautiful in and then build the family's outfits around yours. Pick an outfit that is slightly dressier than your everyday look.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Choose 2-3 colors that complement each other while also provide visual diversity. When considering colors, opt for muted vs bright ones. Stick primarily with solid colors and a few coordinating subtle patterns and textures. Try laying all the outfits out all together while planning to help you decide what works and what doesn’t. Need help deciding? Don’t be afraid to ask your photographer for help!

Comfort & Fit

Remember that you might be sitting, laying down, or playing with your kids during your session so be sure to choose outfits that are comfortable but also fit well.

Be Timeless

Avoid graphics, logos, words, and characters. Consider whether the style will be a distraction when you look at the photos 10 years from now (hello, 80s poofy sleeves!).

Dress for the Weather

No one wants to be freezing or sweating during a family session. Layers add visual interest but are also great for when you get too warm (scarfs, hats, vest, cardigans, blazers, jackets). Layers also let you easily vary your look in your shots and poses – just add a sweater or jacket and you have a completely different look. Doing a session with a baby? Change them into their outfit right when you arrive or have them wear a bib to avoid drool.

Complete the Look

Don’t forget about shoes and accessories, especially by choosing shoes appropriate for your location. Accessories are also a great way to coordinate looks. Ladies, avoid necklaces that can get tangled as you cuddle and tickle your little ones.

Be Yourself!

If you never wear a dress, don’t. If your husband doesn’t care for button down shirts, he doesn’t need to wear one. Wear clothing that fits your style and is clean, nice, and comfortable. And don’t forget to keep clothing choices for all family members in a similar style (dressy, casual, sporty, etc).
